Is it Healthy to Watch TV Before Sleeping

If you’re like many people, you have some type of routine that you do every night before you go to sleep. People spend an enormous amount of time choosing the right bed sheets and everything else in order to create a perfect environment for sleep, yet they often overlook one of the biggest issues when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, the television. It isn’t at all uncommon for that routine to involve watching some television before you go to sleep or even while you’re attempting to fall asleep.

These days, it’s a rarity to find the house that doesn’t have a television in the bedroom. This is a modern-day convenience, but it’s interesting to note that the room once set aside for sleeping and recharging the body is now a place where many people go to stretch out and stare at the television throughout most of the night.

Is Watching TV Before Bed a Good Idea?

If you spend any time at all watching the news, you’ve probably heard people weigh in on this issue. Most sleep experts, as well as your family doctor, will tell you that you don’t need to be watching television at bedtime. It’s important to realize that there is a big difference between watching a movie a few hours before you go to bed and lying in bed while having the TV blaring. To better understand the differences between these two, they have to be discussed separately.

Watching Television Before You go to Bed

Ideally, you should try to refrain from watching anything that might upset you in any capacity before you go to bed. This is different for everybody so it’s important to pay attention to the things that you are most sensitive to. In other words, if you find the nightly news disturbing because of all the violence that goes on in the world, you might want to refrain from watching the late news.

Otherwise, you could find yourself replaying some story that you heard instead of sleeping. The same is true for violent television shows and movies, as well as horror flicks. Even if you consider yourself a relatively brave individual when it comes to this sort of thing, it may not be the best idea to watch it right before bed unless you’d like to become the main character in your own version while you dream.

Most professionals don’t have a problem with you getting a few hours of television time before you go to sleep. As long as you don’t watch something that keeps you up all night long, it’s usually considered acceptable.

Watching Television in Bed

If you have a television in your bedroom and you’re stretched out watching it as you try to fall asleep, you’re talking about something that’s in an entirely different category. Virtually everyone agrees that this is a bad idea. There are so many reasons that this can keep you awake. First, you have the constant noise. It can be hard to adjust the volume on any television where you can hear the dialogue in a television show or movie without being blasted out of the room every time a commercial comes on.

Do you really want to drift off to sleep only to be awakened a few minutes later because of some person screaming on a used car commercial? You also have to deal with the light the television emits. This light is constantly flickering and changing and that can keep you awake. Therefore, almost everyone agrees that you shouldn’t have the television on while you’re trying to go to sleep. It’s basically the same thing as having someone shining a flashlight in your face and talking to you all night long.

Granted, there are plenty of people that do have television in their bedroom and they fall asleep with it on each and every night. Not every person is going to have a problem with it. In fact, some people find it much easier to go to sleep with the light and the noise than they do in a dark room that is completely quiet.

These people have conditioned themselves to this type of environment. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best environment to be in. If you’re having problems sleeping, this might be one of the first things that you decide to look at. It could make all the difference in the world, but you won’t know until you give it a try.
